CAN (LET’S) is part of a project that is creating a virtual reality simulation project that shows what it is like to live in poverty, based on actual lived experiences. We became involved in the project through Basic Income BC. We have a small committee designing the project. Our research study recently received a grant of over $60,000 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Grant.

The Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Funding is provided for short-term research development projects of up to two years that are proposed by individuals or teams. Insight Development Grants foster research in its early stages.
We are excited by this grant and our ability to move forward with this project. Poverty and all the traps, red tape, frustrations, barriers, and discrimination, is hard to adequately explain to people who have never experienced it. We are hoping that this project will help people better understand real lived experiences.
CAN (LET’S) will be providing our accessibility expertise. We will also be a resource and guide to ensure that people with lived poverty expertise are being treated in an ethical and responsible manner (including being paid).
