Gateway Theatre Workshop

June 27, 2022

CAN (LET’S) provided our Disability Awareness workshop to the staff of the Gateway Theatre. The theatre is learning more about the needs of their customers, performers, and staff with disabilities. The workshop generated great conversation.

Realwheels Theatre[Text Wrapping Break] Realwheels is a professional theatre company based in Vancouver with a mission to create and produce performances that deepen understanding of the disability experience. Their vision is full inclusion and integration of disability both on – and off – Canadian stages; a barrier-free, diverse performing arts world that reflects the real world and all of its people.

CAN (LET’S) was contacted by Hannah Pearson, Acting Academy Manager at Realwheels Theatre. Realwheels was interested in a Disability Awareness workshop. They were suggested to us by the wonderful folks at Kickstart Disability and Arts. As their students got to know one another and work together, they believed that a disability awareness workshop would be beneficial to the overall class. They were specifically looking for someone with lived expertise. They noted that all students identified as disabled.

We delivered the workshop and there was great conversation among the group. As an audience of disabled people, they were happy to see themselves properly represented in a workshop. They were excited by the information that reflected their own experience and the information which helped them to extend their disability awareness. We were contacted after the workshop by several attendees who said they were so happy our content was being shared in our communities.
