CAN (LET’S) was happy to offer our biggest grant to date in support of Dark Before the Dawn, a wellness retreat for Black community from September 16th – September 19th 2022 at Zajac Ranch, Mission, BC (Unceded S’ólh Téméxw (Stó:lō) & Kwantlen territory).
Organizer Kendra Coupland gave CAN (LET’S) a HUGE shoutout for providing “funding which allowed 8 disabled folks to attend the retreat this year, as well as provide funding which went towards to increased accessibility through body-affirming chairs, stim toys, & shower seats, as well as training for staff for mental health first aid and closed captioning of our recordings.
This funding came through at a time when the last of the grants we applied for was rejected because they said “Black people we’re not a diverse group”. Organizers were in “pretty deep grief” as they tried to “negotiate what aspects of accessibility we might have cut back on in order to cut the budget back since so much had to be stripped back from the original vision already and CAN (LET’S) BC really came through to save us.”
