CAN (LET’S) did an accessibility audit of Massy Arts Society venue. “Located in the historic Ming Wo building in Vancouver’s Chinatown, Massy Arts Society is a ground-level, wheelchair-accessible space featuring an interior gallery space and a window gallery. Opened in September 2021, the new Massy Arts Society gallery hosts visual art exhibitions, book launches, artist talks, performances, and community events.”
While this venue is small, there were multiple recommendations made on how to make the space more accessible for staff and visitors. It was obvious that care and thought had gone into the design. This is vital to accessibility as it is much easier to incorporate accessibility from the start than to retrofit it after opening.
Massy Arts Society Constitution is:
“To advance the public’s appreciation of the arts by producing public art exhibitions, presentations, and performance arts events, and by providing a forum for qualified artists to exhibit, present, or perform their artistic works through participation in such events, with a priority on Indigenous and over-excluded voices.
To advance education by providing presentations and instructional seminars on topics related to the performing, literary, and visual arts.“
