Free the fern reached out to LET’S and asked us to facilitate our Breaking Barriers workshop for their board and volunteers.
LET’S was especially excited to deliver a workshop for free the fern because the organization originated because of the Champlain Heights Trails and our office is in Champlain Heights. We only had to go a few roads over to host this workshop. LET’S had not previously heard of the good work this community non-profit is doing. We were interested to learn more about their organization’s development, the work they were doing, and how they hoped to move forward.

The Breaking Barriers workshop, which is a combination or taster, of our Disability Awareness, Gender & Sexuality, and Imposter Syndrome workshops. This is a great introductory workshop to jumpstart conversations about equity and how the lack of accessibility, diversity, and equity can lead to people feeling like an imposter in one’s environment.
The group who attended were a keen audience and had thoughtful questions. The knowledge and comfort level of the participants varied. Our facilitator appreciated how participants leaned into discomfort to ask questions and seek ways enhancing their ability to be an active-ally.
About free the fern:
In January 2021, Free the Fern was formed when a group of residents became concerned about the spread of invasive plants along the Champlain Heights Trail system in South Vancouver. In August 2022, Free the Fern Stewardship Society officially incorporated as a nonprofit.
