2SLGBTQIA+ World History
Join us in this interactive workshop as we explore the history of 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Agender, plus) identities, people, and cultures around the world.
Colonization affected/affects how we perceive gender. Individuals were severely punished for expressing any gender or gender expression outside of the accepted norm of two genders and two sexes. In the middle of the 20th century, there was a pushback against this. We are now learning/relearning about cultures around the world that recognize, and have documented, a broad spectrum of gender and sexual identities.
The impacts of colonialism have been written in laws around the world, the way certain people are policed, medical decisions forced on people, and what and who is included in education and narratives. Colonialism controlled, disciplined, shamed, suppressed, and isolated those whose identities are not in alignment with colonial ideas. Join us as we learn about the many people around the world whose unstoppable determination and bravery gave voice to those who identities were attempted to be erased. Learn about movements, protests, legal victories, and community created to center, celebrate, and fight for the rights of those of us who are 2SLGBTQIA+.
LET’S’ 2SLGBTQIA+ workshops are created, researched and facilitated by 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
